Mean

I'm such a meeeeeean meeeeeeean person. My goodness!!

Today in the cafeteria I was having breakfast and I happened to sit on the side of the cafeteria so I was facing towards the rest of it. I could see one of the places where you can get drinks. Well, first of all there were no cups so people would come up look for them, see empty crates where they usually are kept sigh and go in search of cups. Those who'd not wanted to wait in the busy section for drinks brought their cups or perhaps their cereal looking for milk. weeelllll....we have two spots for 2% one spot for skim one spot for chocolate and a spot for whole milk. My favorite kid to watch was the one who sat his tray at the table in front of mine and went to go get a drink. No cups...so he lifted the crate up to make sure there was none hiding and heaved a big sigh and went off in search of a glass. I'll bet the line was too long in the center so he comes back to near our tables and decides to get it there. First, he tried chocolate...nothing came out, so then he tried skim, nothing came out, okay, soo he tries both 2%'s and nothing comes out of them either...perhaps a drop from the one, and at last he goes for the whole milk which there is a lot of. Others would come up with their cereal bowls and the ones who wanted skim were best cause they'd try 'em all and eventually give up and go for whole milk. It's weird that we're so lazy to not want to walk to the other side of the cafeteria to get what we really want. but I've been there, and I've done it. And I don't know why I wanted to laugh. It's frustrating when you're in that situation, but I couldn't help it. I kneeew there was nothing but whole milk, but they didn't and would try everything. Such a meeean meeean person for taking delight in others frustrations. ahhh well! Hope everyone has a wonderful wonderful day!!

A Side Note

Oh, and PS if Bush has his way and starts cutting into National Forest Reserve out west and elsewhere (more than he's done already) I'm going to be one unhappy little camper. [*laughs* sorry just thought it was funny I used the word camper there...it works!! haha] It's sad to think we have to fight to keep our land pretty enough for a few generations to see it and so that we have enough oxygen to survive. *shakes head* and Yes I realize yet again I'm being hypocrytical, I like things that use trees as much as the next person. So :P on my own hypocracy!

Passionate lil' activist

Okay first of all, I probably, no, take that back already, I know I should not be starting an entry this late but I can't help it.

We got into feminist criticism today in English class. I liked it. But it ignited a fire of passionate disscontent that started this past weekend. Here's what I have on facebook and it is and is going to continue to be my away message for a while. but first in order to present you with my commentary must provide you with that which I am commenting on...

My Fourteen Favorite Girls!! Firstly, I want all of you to know that I love u to death and its hard for me to only pick 14 girls to send this to, so consider yourself lucky ... or is it not lucky? If I dont get this back I understand =) I have a game for you. This game has been played since 1977. Once you read this letter, you must send it to 14 girls within five days. On the fifth day, HE(the male of your choice) will either ask you out, or say "I love you." Please send this to your 14 FAV0RitE girls. It has worked for years. Good luck Girls

and here is my commentary....

Because I'm feeling particularly liberal lately and because because I think it's important here's my commentary to the "my fourteen favorite girls" And if I offend anyone in my approach to this I apologize for that and that only. I do not apologize for its content

it offends me for two MAJOR reasons.1) it suppresses women in assuming that "the guy" is always the only one that can and has to take the initiative and that "he's" the only one that can freely express his love. And that women must be submissive to men. 2) it also assumes heterosexism and I'm becoming increasingly aware of and despising of things that assume this. That being said, I appreciate, no I REEALLY appreciate the fact that I may have been selected by some people to be one of your 14 favorite girls, but because of the reasons above just know that it will be deleted. thank you!

I don't like it for other reasons like the whole obligationary thing that is the heart of all chain mail/chain e-mail. I'm all for things that pass on the love, but not when it's got a stipulation that if you don't do it you're doomed. And can't women survive just fine without having to have a man? CERTAINLY!! so :P

I'm also very dissatisfied with Disney lately. I'll give you the site that was my findings after a particularily difficult disscussion in English class... so if you'd like to check it out you can feel free to GO HERE . If not, I understand but here's a quote "We of the Powhatan Nation disagree. The film distorts history beyond recognition. Our offers to assist Disney with cultural and historical accuracy were rejected. Our efforts urging him to reconsider his misguided mission were spurred." :P that's not very fair of Disney!! I loooove the IDEA of pocahontas still but to turn a piece of what was almost certainly fiction into fact using the names of people that actually exsisted is rediculous. Not to mention all the Disney movies in general. While I love them, I'm going to be like Dr. Farrington and I'm going to love to deconstruct them mostly with feminist criticism. But it's hard too cause while I love seeing life in a new light and I finally feel like I'm not biased or in the WASP as much as I was before sometimes it's so nice to be satisfied. This stuff is making me aanngry!! I said to myself today while particularly passionate and then repeated it to a wonderful friend on line, "who knew I was such a lil' activist?" I loved being so content all the time. I was satisfied and now...all that's changing. I still don't like scary movies, but I'm beginning to despise the romantic comedies I used to love so much. Okay, not despise I guess, but dislike more, and my Pocahontas icon is dashed to pieces :P And life sometimes just generally sucks, but I feel freeer here than I did where I was before. So, it all works out. *shrugs* Thoughts anyone??

The Lonliness Hole

Damnit! I never knew lonliness was such a hard hole to climb out of.

Let's start this by saying I'm not nearly as depressed as I was at the beginning of the year. Cause then, it wasn't just lonliness it was other stuff too. So, I'm much more happy, I feel more self assured, I feel like things are really looking up for my life, I got accepted to go to New Zealand or Australia this summer, if you want to know more about what I'm talking about visit isv RHC is going much better than it was before, and in a nut shell, I'm happy! But that doesn't mean I'm not still lonely.

Every semester I've been here, I've first of all, always had Daisy as a roomate, and my current roomate is great, she really is, but she's not someone I feel a strong bond to. All of those people are elsewhere and usually busy. And please, please don't misunderstand me here, I'm not complaining, well I guess I am, but I AM greatful to all those people that I do have. I really am. I reeeeally reeeeeally am. But I want someone here to eat with and spend time with and have sleepovers with and watch movies til who knows when with. Right now all that time is spent on HW and other things. My weekends are when I feel it the most. And here's the thing I am trying to "put myself out there" I'm have something to do EVERY night now. Every night it's something or another, or maybe two things that I have to do in some cases. And it's so good to see all those people, but I haven't found anyone to hang out with all the time, or even enough to feel like I have a good and true grounding connection with someone this year. It's likethe more busy I am the harder it is for people to find me so that when I'm not busy, aka weekends, I'm lonely. Of all the battles in my life this lonliness is something that's truly the hardest, because I feel like it's finally gone, like everything's going well, and it is, but then the lonliness comes back. And it makes my heart break for people much less fortunate than I. My home life is more than I could have ever dreamed!! Seriously my aunt and all my family are so supportive of my trip even though they know how much it is going to cost, financially. My friends that I have although maybe far do what they can and I feel so thankful and wonderful. And in my life I have been blessed with soo much love I can't even begin to describe it to you. And still I'm selfish, still I yearn for that good connection, here on campus, this year. And the funny thing is I could be in the best mood EVER. But I'm lonely too, because I don't feel like I have anyone to share it with. And still I'm happy because whatever it was made me in a good mood, but I still feel it far back in my head that tug of lonliness. It's a battle I'm going to have to learn to live with, and one that I do have some control over, but it just seems like the harder I try the lonlier I am. *shrugs*

And again plllleeease don't think I'm ungreatful, I have so much. I feel like the dad from the movie Shall We Dance when he says, "I was so afraid of what you'd say when I told you I wanted more, I wasn't happy, when we have so much." Or something along those lines. I feel ashamed like him, to want more when I have been given so much. But still it lingers. And still it's there. That tug of lonliness wanting to suck me down.

I'm on the cusp but this is more proof of my Libraness

Sometimes I'm concidered a Libra, sometimes I'm considered a scorpio. This just goes to prove how much more Libran I am that scorpio :) It's like my opposite.
"you need approval like a fish needs water" Interesting because it's very true, I like to do and wear things that may not appeal to others, but that's my independence coming through. By those who I know I often seek approval and try to do things to please them. Not so sure about the element of air, I always considered it more water but *shrugs*

The Bell Tower in the Distance

First of all I would like to extend a round of applause to those dilligent enough to read what I have below. I would also like to thank you from the bottom of my heart because I know that must mean that I mean something to you. Because, it doesn't make sense, but I wrote it, and although I don't even know the significance of it or why I even like the last paragraph so much I thought I would display it to you all anyway. In case I should happen to find someone dilligent enough to read it, or someone who takes a slight interest in what I have written. *shrugs* it's a journal entry for my English class, I also find it interesting that I don't even know what it's about. *laughs* anyway...read on...if you dare...

The Bell Tower in the Distance

I felt like a dog today. Not because I was peeing in the bushes (eeewww), or because I felt faithful to someone for bringing me my food, not even because I was in a playful mood. Rather, it was because I had to find the perfect spot in the Oak Grove.

Let me start at the beginning. After watching my usual hour of television while lying in bed I decided that I wanted to eat by myself. This for me is untypical because ever since I got back from doing the College Program in Florida I feel like I need people around me all the time, or at least, most of the time. As I was eating at Folger’s dining hall by myself I knew that after I was done I was going to take a walk. With me I carried a book: “A Short History of Nearly Everything” by Bill Bryson. When I found it in the library, I picked it up because he is also the author of “A Walk in the Woods” a book I adore. The book is a very scientific one. He studied things in science and talked to scientists for three years before sitting down to write his book. He tries to explain the unexplainable and I very much like his style of writing. Sometimes his attempts to be funny don’t work, but most of the time I enjoy his satiric or joking manor. The reason I mention this at all is because I feel like I need to find a perfect place to read this. (This is where feeling like a dog comes in.)

I start by heading towards the tennis courts, but quickly decide nothing over there will work because the land is so flat that the grass may still be damp despite our lack of rain recently. So before I reach the tri-halls I turn right and decide to head up the stairs to the Oak Grove despite my earlier convictions that I needed to find some place other than the Oak Grove. I’m looking for a sunny location. The heat from the sun is a nice contrast to the too coldness of Folger dining hall. Off in the distance, almost at the back of the Oak Grove, I find the general area in which I would like to read. The perfect spot is more difficult and takes time. This is how I end up feeling like a dog; winding around in circles looking at the ground, but not sniffing, looking for a pleasant place. I’m looking for a place that lacks flowers so the bumble bees stay away, a place where the ground isn’t too sand like looking because that usually means ants, and a spot that has some nice cushiony green grass. After a few more circles I decide on a place and fall to the ground. In front of me I see four people playing Frisbee, there are many others scattered in the Oak Grove like the dots on a spotted plant, others are moving swiftly to destinations only they know, and to my left is Oakland Avenue and I can see the store Copies Now not too far down the street behind me. Finally ready to read I turn on my side, back to the street, and open the book. I can’t even read the first line of where I last left off. I read it three times, but the words don’t formulate meaning and I give up. I stay where I am but turn over on my back letting the book close by itself, because without my hand to hold down the left side, it won’t stay open.

Looking upward, I see a leaf falling down. The leaf itself is tiny and insignificant to all the other leaves, yet my eyes follow it downward. As it gets closer and closer I begin to get more and more interested because it’s headed towards me. I can’t even begin to describe the amount of joy I feel when this leaf lands on my stomach. I pick it up, turn it over, and see that it isn’t colorful, it is so green and soft it seems like it should still be on the tree. I set it on top of my book and begin to ponder what it was about the leaf that gave me such joy. I immediately think of when I was little, my sister and I attempting to catch the leaves that fell from the tree in our neighbors yard. My parents hated that tree, because we always had to clean up “their” leaves, but leaves are no one’s, no matter which tree they come from. I can picture us laughing; the more we get close to catching a leaf the harder it is. We never caught very many leaves, if any, and I begin to wonder then if we had been able to, would we still have enjoyed it? I know immediately that the answer is no. But isn’t that what we wanted to do? Catch the leaves. Which brings me to thinking about English class when were talking about how if we were dating someone that we previously considered an ideal partner, we wouldn’t enjoy them as much as someone who we didn’t know we wanted. The fact that we couldn’t catch them made it all the more enticing to try.
And then a voice comes into my head: What in these quiet woods should be so forbidden? It’s from the movie Tuck Everlasting. One of my favorite lines from it actually. But why did it come?

And then I stop thinking about everything all together, I just enjoy being, smiling upward. But before long, my earlier question about why I enjoyed the leaf falling on me, becomes more encompassing. Why am I enjoying myself at all? Why do I love nature so much? I feel like I’m in the woods, hiking somewhere, even though I am lying on the ground mostly motionless.

What in these quiet woods should be so forbidden? The voice repeats itself again.

What is it that makes this so much fun? I’ve always loved nature and I enjoy being close to it, and attempting to understand it, but that begs the question, why? Would it be different if I had a different upbringing? Does my race and status at a university make me enjoy myself? Or do I just simply like science? I immediately think to a story I had been writing one night on a whim of sleep-deprived motivation. This was unlike anything I’d ever written in that I didn’t feel like it was me writing, I felt like I was just being taken over and made to type things. The story also does not involve myself, or a character similar to myself or anyone that I know. Usually, I can’t make up characters, and have to use people I know, but there they were. And the girl in the story was going to be raped. (I say going to because I haven’t gotten there yet, if I will ever be able to finish it) She was going to be raped in the woods. If I were her, would the woods be some place I would never want to be? Would the confines of my house be ten times more alluring than the unknown outside? Or would I still have the same passion for outdoors I always did, just be too afraid to be out there?

What in these quiet woods should be so forbidden?

The previous thoughts let me to thinking again about English and how we were talking that everything was relative. And then how we all thought of different “trees” when asked to think of one; most were related to a memory. Is all life relative and skewed due to your experiences? Is everything nurture and nothing nature? And then I think about my friend Meghan who is very outgoing and her mind just thinks differently. I, meanwhile have to think about things for a long time before I speak. I perceive a lot of the world around me before I want to spout the things going on inside my head. I get most of my energy from internal thoughts and things while she needs people around her to get her happy and motivated and thinking. Most would call this introverted and extroverted. Thinking about our pasts, I know that she has always been like this. I haven’t known her all my life, but I know a lot of stories about her life and how she was similar to how she is now. And I know that I have always been one to keep quiet, yet people would be amazed at the things I remember, because I wasn’t engaged in the conversation a lot of times they don’t even remember me being there. I don’t think being introverted or extroverted is something you can change. One can become more outgoing and one can express ideas more openly and easily, but I still think introverts will always be able to entertain themselves in their own mind more easily than extroverts. And that extroverts need more interaction to ?stimulate? their brain. I think there are other things like this that are not changeable. Therefore, if Meghan had lived the life I lived and I the life she lived, I don’t think we would have come out thinking of it the same way. Sure, things would be similar and I may have been more conservative and she more liberal, but I don’t think we would think of things the same way, because we all think things differently. Similarly, maybe, and culture and experiences can certainly have an effect on the way we feel about some things, but I still think we are all born with likes and dislikes, and different ways of looking at the world. Take a baby for example that will not, no matter how much you try and make them, eat applesauce, while another devours it. I think it has to be the same with traits.

Faintly, in the distance I hear a clock chime the hour and it breaks my reverie. It’s hard to tell, but I’m almost positive it chimed the hour six. Trying to go back to that feeling of serenity and peace, I can’t. No matter how hard I try. I know the time. It’s six o’ clock. Suddenly, I have things to do. I had them to do all along, but without knowing the time everything was wonderful. And I realize what it is about the woods and hiking and nature that is so enticing. In nature time is non-existent or bendable. When I go hiking, I have no where else to be. There’s nothing else to do, but hike, and play. The calmness comes from not thinking about trivial day to day things, like when an assignment is due and how I should be doing this not that, and how I need to be here at this time, and doing this at five. I can just be. I can just exist. I can think and ponder philosophical things, or I can not think at all. When you look into the sky you see the past. The stars that are there might have burnt out already because it takes light time to travel. In geologic time we aren’t even a speck of dust. Things that take millions of years to form, we take for granted. I suppose I must be very fascinated with time. I like to know what a river is going to eventually do, given enough time. I like to think about how mountains got to be there and what damage can be done in a second of time and what things take billions of years to form.

What in these quiet woods should be so forbidden?

I could lose myself in time. Walk into the woods and not want to come back to this world of chaos and carefully scheduled things. I’ve been thinking a lot about the culture, or the Native-American tribe that I apologize for not being able to remember the name of, which has no future tense. To not take time for granted like that would be wonderful. We don’t know if there is going to be a tomorrow. A line from one of my favorite poems “Comes the Dawn” comes to mind. “… and you learn to build all of your roads today because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans and futures have a way of falling mid-flight…”

Thinking all these things can be exhausting, but it was exhilarating. I was sad that I could not bring back that feeling that I’d had before I knew the time. The sun was setting behind a building causing me to get chilly every once in a while, especially when the wind blew. I decided to go back to a world of time, meetings, homework, and people. Giving one last look to the leaf, I grab it, stand up, and wait for a semi large gust of wind. Throwing it as high as I can, I watch it travel away. Eventually it will hit the ground, and until some unknowing stranger kicks it up with its feet, it will have to stay there, but for now, traveling and swirling in the wind it is free. I pull my hair tie out. Usually it just gets in the way, but sometimes I love the feel of my hair dancing with the wind. And sometimes, like the leaf, it too needs to be free.

Humbled

I had an entry written about 3 hours ago. I tried to post it and blogger was done. My mood is gone to redo that entry.

Today we had an RHC meeting. I'm not sure how well I am going to do as president. I'm trying I promise I am, but today, and it was only our first real meeting, I felt like I was failing. We have this huge Halls Of Horror event coming up. And I have never liked it in the first place. It's soooo much set-up and it's too scary for me, I will be scared by even my own section of it! and blood and gore and ick. They tone it down for the children of coarse, but still. I don't like haunted houses, and we weren't getting very far at this meeting. We had all these ideas which is great but the event is in two weeks and we have to be realistic here!! We didn't have any time to throw around ideas that we ourselves wanted to do we were too busy trying to get the details done for HOH. I think I am going to help set up and get things ready but once it is I can't be there I'm to chicken to be at my (well partially my) haunted house. We kept getting off topic and I feel like it was my job to keep us on topic. The meeting lasted an hour and half and we got few things accomplished.

Meanwhile, during the meeting FLUSH came to our hall and they were right outside the conference room door. Doing skits, and fun things. Just as we were leaving they decided to sing really sad songs and have a moment of silence for a soldier that was recently killed in Iraq. The RD, Tedd said it was okay to have it during this time, but could we have ended at a worse time? Could we have picked a worse time to have to walk out and lock the conference room door? Making all our noise. And it was humbling. For a while the last two of us, me and the advisor, just sat there lights turned off door opened. We didn't want to go out. And it was humbling. People who really knew him were sad, as they should be, and even though I didn't I was. I wanted to fall down and cry right there on the conference room floor, for all those who did know him, for him, for everyone else that has died in Iraq, and for that matter every war. And just thinking that it could have been anyone I knew any day from anything. I had to pace the room to keep from doing so. Taking, gulping, in deep breaths of air trying to be as quiet as I could. I wish I didn't have a roomate sometimes. I probably would have broken down in my room but she was sleeping. I'm downstairs now. And she turned off my monitor prolly cause she was bothered by the light, but I couldn't see to even find my bed then. So I turned it back on and she woke up for a second. *siigghs* And still I can't get the saddness out of me. It makes me feel like I'm living such a selfish and insignificant life. And yet I feel bad because I can't comprehend what anyone is feeling. Anyone who knew him, or anyone who's lost someone close. I'm not saying I want someone close to me to die, I feel very lucky. But I also feel suerficial, like I have no way to connect with people, as most people have lost someone. And still now I feel my nose and eyes tingling.

It's been a really stressful night and I need to go to bed, but still that won't solve anything. And still my school work piles higher. Maybe tomorrow I will post what I was going to which was a journal entry I did for english class, but right now that feels superficial. But so does school for that matter and everything that I have a love for studying... *siighs**

I appologize I really do, I promise I was GOING to post a happy post. And I can't say I'm always sad or I always feel this way but it always seems I write when I'm sad..and that's been much to frequent lately. I'm so sorry!! You're allowed to stop reading this blog if you're tired of it.
